The Mystery Of The Missing Basement Cat On Bronx's Ward Avenue

"I pray every day that whoever took him has a conscience and does the right thing and brings him back safe."

Sometime between the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 14, and the morning of Thursday, Oct. 15, Georgie the cat’s owner believes he was stolen from the basement of her building at 1154 Ward Ave. in the Soundview neighborhood of the Bronx. His owner, Eileen Colon, said in an interview that she thinks her beloved orange cat may have been taken by someone else who lives in the building.

“No one from the outside has access to my building — you need a key pass to gain entrance to the main lobby door,” she said. “The two gates leading into the basement also require a key pass, and no one in our building has access besides our super and a couple of people that live in the basement."

“But more importantly,” she said, “no one from the outside would know that there are cats in my basement.”

Colon said she’s sick with worry. “Georgie is a very sweet body and WE WANT HIM BACK!!” she wrote in a text message. “I just want our baby back at home where he belongs.”

According to Colon, Georgie has been living in her building’s basement for the past five years, where she said he has been well taken care of by her and her family.

Before Georgie took up residence in the basement, Colon explained, “someone had left him in an empty apartment to fend for himself.”

Colon said she fears that someone who lives in the building may have taken Georgie to kill mice in their apartment. “Certain individuals in my building believe cats are only good for this purpose, and it is just a gut feeling,” she said.

Georgie has a mild medical condition, a heart murmur, according to Colon.

Georgie’s owner has asked anyone who has any information about his whereabouts to please come forward. She can be reached at Jezebel1280@gmail.com.

“I pray every day that whoever took him has a conscience and does the right thing and brings him back safe,” she said. “I just hope that he is being taken care of. I really do hope that the article helps me find my baby.”
