New Year's Ball Arrives In Times Square

The 2020 Waterford crystal ball is roughly the same weight as a healthy killer whale.

NEW YORK CITY — Here comes the ball. The 2020 Waterford Crystal sphere set to drop on the last midnight of 2019 arrived in Times Square Friday morning.

The 12-foot-wide ball weighs is covered with 2,688 crystals illuminated by 32,256 LED lights and is topped by a seven-foot-tall "2020," which arrived in the city earlier this month.

The whole thing weighs in at 11,875 pounds, roughly the weight of an African elephant or a killer whale.

The ball will be raised and lit up 6 p.m. Tuesday before an evening of live Times Square performances — including LL Cool J, The Village People and Alanis Morissette —and the iconic midnight drop.

The Times Square Alliance will also livestream "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" starting at 6 p.m. Dec. 31.

Times Square has hosted the legendary New Year's celebration since 1904 and a dropping of the ball since 1907.
