New York City Issues Heat Alert As Temps Rise Into 90s

Better get ready to crank up the air conditioner.

UPDATE July 6, 10 a.m.: Time to head to cooler ground. The National Weather Service has issued a heat alert for New York City on Wednesday.

A heat advisory is in place starting at 1 p.m. Wednesday and going through Thursday at 8 p.m.

“Severe heat can be extremely dangerous — and all New Yorkers should think first and foremost about their safety and the safety of those around them," Mayor Bill de Blasio said late Wednesday morning. "Today we’re reminding New Yorkers: check in on friends, family, neighbors, senior citizens and those with chronic health conditions."

“As the weather heats up," the mayor said, "find a place to cool down — and stay hydrated and protected from the sun until the heat passes.”

Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-90s, but the heat index will rise to 100 to 105 degrees with humidity. The humidity has also led to an Air Quality Alert.

The start of the abbreviated work week on Tuesday is forecast to reach 89 degrees, while the temperature will also hover at 89 on Wednesday, according to The Weather Channel. The temperature is forecast to reach 94 degrees on Thursday and close out the work week at 91. The heat index will flirt with 100 degrees both days.

If the temperature does reach 94, it would be the hottest day of the year. The temperature reached 92 degrees on May 28 — the only 90-degree day of 2016 so far.

In order to qualify as an official heat wave it would need to be 90 degrees for three straight days.

The same weather brought heat advisories and temperature into the triple digits to much of the southern and southeastern United States throughout the Fourth of July Weekend.

The heat and humidity should break on Saturday when a line of thunderstorms rolls through. The high to start out next week is 86 degrees with under 50 percent humidity.
