When's the first day of school in New York City? That, and other must-know dates for parents, students and teachers.

The first day of school in New York City is September 7. Feel free to mark it on your calendar as one of the most dreaded days of the year for students and teachers — and feel free not to feel guilty about marking it as one of your favorites. The New York City School District has released its 2017-2018 calendar for public schools.

The calendar includes winter and spring vacations, religious holidays, federal holidays, early dismissals, parent-teacher conferences and other important dates.

  • 9/8: First full day for kindergarten, Partial day for pre-k
  • 9/21-22: Rosh Hashanah - No School

October


  • 10/9: Columbus Day observed - No School

November


  • 11/7: Election Day - No School for Students
  • 11/9-10: Parent-Teacher Conferences for High School
  • 11/13-14: Parent-Teacher Conferences for District 75 school programs
  • 11/15-16: Parent-Teacher Conferences for Elementary school
  • 11/29-30: Parent-Teacher Conferences for Middle school
  • 11/23-24: Thanksgiving Recess - No School

December


  • 12/25-29: Winter Recess - No School
