NPR Music's Turning The Tables: A Celebration Of Female Musicians
Daniela's Lens takes us front and center to NPR's celebration of 21st Century female musicians, including Carley Rae Jepsen and Jamila Wood!

Turning The Tables, a series launched by NPR Music, held a special night of performances and conversation showcasing some of today's most dynamic female musicians. Co-creator Ann Powers was there to host and moderate as Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Carly Rae Jepsen and other incredible talent took the stage at NYC's Damrosch Park last night.
Daniela's Lens gives us an exclusive look at the stunning performances and other highlights from the evening. Check it out below!

7:30 p.m.
NPR invites to a free concert with some of the most interesting female artists. I couldn't be more excited!

7:49 p.m.
"I'm with her" is first. Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan.

8:08 p.m.
Ann Powers moderates the panel discussion.

8:15 p.m.
"Tell us about writing a 'like' song." says Ann Powers and references to Carly Rae Jepsens song 'I really like you'.
"We kind of wanted to caption the thrill of the moment before you really want to tell someone you love them. And I remember walking into a grocery store and I was in this new, and we were just getting orange juice and milk, and I felt like it's going to just fall out of my mouth: "I love you!" And that was the feeling I was trying to catch." says Carly.

8:20 p.m.
And then Carly sings 'I really like you'. Unfortunately, the photographers are not allowed to take her photo while she performs. I turn around and get some nice photos of the happy crowd.

8:35 p.m.
Mitski Miyawaki
"How did you come up with the song title for Geyser?" asks Ann Powers
"It seems mysterious from the outside but from the songwriters perspective, it's a very vague and simple process. I just thought, what's something that is about to explode and then suddenly explodes? And that's a geyser." says Mitski.

8:40 p.m.
Mitski performing 'Geyser'.

8:49 p.m.
"I always loved singing. I came to singing through poetry. I think it wasn't until I started writing poetry that I realized that I can write from my experience." says Jamila.

9:05 p.m.
Jamila Woods performs.

9:12 p.m.
"I was wracking my brain for a more interesting way to talk about the way I felt. And looking for a fancy way to say what I meant and as an exercise one day, literally one day, what do I look forward in songs? Something I can really relate to and what if I experiment and say exactly what's on my mind. And I did that! And I have continued to do that. So it's always funny when someone is like, alright what's this song about? And all I wanted to say is probably in the first three seconds of singing" says Phoebe.

9:15 p.m.
Phoebe Bridgers performs.

9:18 p.m.
"I can always tell the sessions something good is happening because while we are in the middle of writing everyone is dancing," says Carly.

9:20 p.m.
"I will wash your hair at night. How did it come you write these moving private images and moments?" asks Ann Powers.
"Well, actually when I wrote this song, I didn't have a 'you'. I actually wrote this when I didn't have anybody, and I just decided to write everything I needed to hear in that moment. So, I will wash your hair at night; I will take care of you." says Mitski.

9:21 p.m.
The atmosphere.

9:23 pm
About her song 'Motion Sickness': "With this particular song, I didn't have to try because I just had to say what was happening. It was a funny story."

9:24 p.m.
Carly!

9:38 p.m.
Jamila after the show with fans.

9:39 p.m.
I get a nice solo photo of her.

9:40 p.m.
And one of Phoebe!
