NEW YORK CITY — New York City-based companies locked down more than $600 million in federal contracts awarded amid the nation's fight against the coronavirus, according to data.

The CARES Act relief funds went toward surgical gloves, hand sanitizer and medical supplies. They helped build temporary hospitals, paid for transportation and fresh vegetables.

Not all of it went back into New York City — roughly $200 million was spent on relief efforts in the city, according to the Federal Procurement Data System.

But the massive expenditures give a sense of how intertwined New York City companies were in coronavirus relief efforts — and could be again if a dreaded "second wave" continues to flow over the country and President-elect Joe Biden presses for another stimulus to fight the virus and buoy the economy.

"I'm convinced the Vice President — or, the President-elect, I should say now — will achieve the stimulus that'll help us get back on our feet," Mayor Bill de Blasio said Friday on MSNBC. "Absolutely confident."
