NEW YORK CITY — More than 1,000 New Yorkers have tested positive for the new coronavirus as of Wednesday morning, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The 1,339 confirmed COVID-19 cases in New York City — 695 newly reported — make up the bulk of the 2,382 cases in New York State, said Cuomo. Just Wednesday moring, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the number was 923 - though he warned it would certainly pass 1,000 today.

"The number of cases is up because we're taking more tests," Cuomo explained. "But the numbers are going up, hence the increased actions to reduce the spread."
