NYC Coronavirus Cases Top 50K, Cuomo Says
New York State has just six days until it "burns through" its ventilator stock, the governor said.

NEW YORK CITY — More than 50,000 New York City dwellers had tested positive for novel coronavirus as of Thursday morning, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said.
Cuomo said 51,809 people had tested positive for COVID-19 as of April 2, a little over a month since the first case was reported in New York City.
There were 1,397 COVID-19-related deaths in New York City, with 16,336 cases in Queens, 12,983 cases in Brooklyn, 9,107 in The Bronx, 7,278 in Manhattan and 2,723 on Staten Island, according to the Department of Health.

At the current hospitalization rate, which has not yet showed signs of slowing, New York State will "burn through" its ventilator stock within six days, Cuomo said.

Anesthesia and BiPAP machines are being converted to serve as ventilators and medical workers have been splitting the current stock so one machine can service two people, Cuomo said.
"The burn rate of ventilators is troubling," Cuomo said. "But we have all these extraordinary measures in place."

Cuomo pleaded with New York manufacturers to pivot toward developing crisis supplies on short supply and promised to finance the transition and purchase the product.
"We need it, like, now," said Cuomo. "That's the stress."

Two new hospital facilities will open this week at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal and the South Beach Psychiatric Center in Staten Island, Cuomo said.
New York City's neighboring counties saw "troubling increases" with 11,567 COVID-19 cases in Westchester and 10,587 in Nassau, Cuomo said.
