NYC Coronavirus Death Toll Rises By 305 In Single Day, Data Show

The city reported 1,562​ people had died from COVID-19 as of Thursday evening. By Friday, it was 1,867.

NEW YORK CITY — More than 300 people died from novel coronavirus in New York City within just 24 hours, city data show.

The number of fatalities jumped to 1,867 people Friday night from the 1,562 the city's Health Department reported the evening before.

"This Friday afternoon, we are beginning now a race against time as we prepare for next week," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference. "We prepare for a very, very difficult week ahead."

There were 11,739 New York City dwellers hospitalized for COVID-19 as of Friday evening with 56,289 total cases, a 6,582 spike from the day before, Health Department data show.

New York continues its struggle to get the medical supplies and personnel it needs to combat a spread projections show has yet to reach its apex.

De Blasio estimated the city has an immediate need for 45,000 new medical personnel, 85,000 hospital beds and up to 3,000 ventilators.

"We have to be clear, this is a wartime dynamic, de Blasio said. "People's lives are at stake."
