New York City's youngest COVID-19 victim will never have an eighteenth birthday.

NEW YORK CITY — Novel coronavirus has claimed the life of its first New York City kid, city and state officials confirm.

The New Yorker who never saw an eighteen birthday was among the 748 people reported to have died from COVID-19 as of Monday evening, city records show.

The city's youngest COVID-19 victim suffered underlying health issues, New York Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker confirmed Tuesday.

"I usually don't like to give out clinical information," Zucker said. "But I can see why the complications of this virus would have caused a problem for that individual."

People over the age of 45 make up 94 percent of New York City dwellers to die from novel coronavirus, city data show.

Only 2 percent of the city's 40,900 cases were under 17 but about 42 percent are between the ages of 18 and 44, according to the New York City Health Department.
