NEW YORK CITY — Scorching, dangerous heat threatens to blanket New York City for two or more days, forecasters warn.

The city is under a heat advisory Monday from noon till Tuesday at 8 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will crack 90 degrees but feel even higher, forecasters warn. The heat index could reach as high as 101 degrees as a combination of high humidity and temperatures descends over the tri-state area, according to the National Weather Service.

"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur," the advisory states.

"The highest index values will occur during the afternoon and early evening hours," the advisory continued. "Heat Advisories may need to be extended into Wednesday."

Cooling centers will be open across the city, with social distancing guidelines and mask-wearing requirements, officials said.

People can find them by calling 311 or visiting the city’s Cooling Center Finder.

“The best ways to beat the heat are to stay cool and hydrated," John Scrivani, NYC's emergency management commissioner, said in a statement. "Drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day. If you don’t have an air conditioner at your home, the city has opened hundreds of cooling centers throughout the five boroughs."

Relief from the heat likely won't come until Thursday, when a weather front is expected to wash over the city.
