NYC Weather: Thunderstorms Bearing Down On City

The city could see scattered storms, heavy rainfall and flash floods Tuesday afternoon and evening — and potentially into Wednesday.

NEW YORK CITY — Heat and humidity aren’t the only weather woes bearing down on New York City.

Scattered thunderstorms could bring heavy rain, gusty winds and flash floods on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service warns.

The city is under a hazardous weather outlook for Tuesday.

“There will be scattered thunderstorms, mainly this afternoon and this evening,” the outlook stated Tuesday. “There is the potential for heavy rainfall which may produce localized flash flooding. Gusty winds and lightning strikes are also threats.”

Showers and storms likely will begin Tuesday after 2 p.m., according to the forecast. After that, there’s an 80 percent chance of rain.

Wednesday also carries a chance of storms — there’s a 50 percent chance of precipitation that day.

Showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 82. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8pm. Low around 73. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday
A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 84. Northwest wind around 7 mph.

Wednesday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. West wind 5 to 8 mph.

Thursday
A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 76 by noon, then falling to around 68 during the remainder of the day. North wind 7 to 11 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon.

A 30 percent chance of showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Friday
A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65.

Friday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 62.
