NYC Weather: Storm To Bring Drenching Rain

NEW YORK CITY – A storm bringing drenching rain and gusty winds is set to hit New York City Tuesday evening, ending a long dry stretch.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook, warning that up to two inches of rain could fall. Showers will start after 11 a.m., the forecast says.

The heavy rain will come after 9 p.m. and could be joined by thunder.

The storms will pass early Wednesday, though there's a chance of showers for the rest of the week, the NWS said.

NYC has seen only 2.4 inches of rain so far in September, with the last significant rainfall on Sept. 10, according to the Weather Channel.

A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Southeast wind around 9 mph.

Tuesday Night
A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 9pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Low around 62. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Wednesday
Showers likely, mainly before noon. The rain could be heavy at times. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 72. West wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 58. Southwest wind 9 to 15 mph.

Thursday
A 20 percent chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Southwest wind around 10 mph.

Mostly cloudy, with a low around 55.

A 30 percent chance of showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 64.

A 30 percent chance of showers before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 52.
