NEW YORK CITY — Get ready to get drenched: torrential downpours could dump up to 3 inches of rain on New York City by Friday, forecasters say.

New Yorkers can expect three days of rain, clouds and sleet that will arrive Wednesday night and not stop until Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

The downpours will hit hardest on Thursday with up to 2 inches of rain predicted, said forecasters.

Rain will continue steadily until about 3 p.m. Friday, but then the weather will dry up for a cloudy evening and a sunny Saturday with highs in the upper 30s, according to the NWS.

There's also a 30 percent chance it could snow on Sunday, forecasters said.

National Weather Forecasters warned anyone heading north of the city to expect icy travel Wednesday night and Thursday as the wet weather freezes in a colder climate.

A 20 percent chance of light rain before 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. North wind 7 to 9 mph.

Wednesday Night
A chance of rain and sleet before 10pm, then rain. Low around 36. Wind chill values between 30 and 35. East wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

Thursday
Rain. High near 48. East wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night
Rain. Low around 44. East wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Friday
Rain, mainly before 3pm. Steady temperature around 45. Southeast wind 6 to 15 mph becoming west in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
