NYC Weekend Subway Service Changes For Aug. 25-26

Heads up: The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, J, M, N, Q, R and S trains won't be running normally this weekend.

NEW YORK, NY -- Here's how the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will screw up your plans this weekend — from late Friday night, Aug. 24, through early Monday morning, Aug. 27 — in the name of "upgrading and maintaining our tracks, stations and signal systems in order to continue to provide our customers with safe and reliable service.

Getting around on the subway this weekend is going to be tough, as a staggering 19(!) train lines will be running with modified service. (For more New York City news delivered straight to your inbox sign up for Patch's free newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

1 train:

  • From 5:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, and Sunday, Aug. 26, downtown 1 trains skip 137 St, 125 St, 116 St, 110 St and 103 St due to track maintenance. As an alternative, use an uptown 1 train to continue your trip. Transfer at 96 St, 145 St or 168 St.

2 train:

  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, free shuttle buses will replace 2 trains between 135 St and E 180 St due to track replacement. 2 trains will run in two sections: between Flatbush Av-Brooklyn College and the 148 St line station, and between E 180 St and Wakefield-241 St. Free shuttle buses will run between 135 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 135 St and/or E 180 St.

3 train:

  • At all times until November 2018, 3 trains will skip 145 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. During this closure, 3 trains will run between New Lots Av and 96 St, and via the 1 to 137 St, the last stop. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service between 148 St and 135 St. Transfer between 2/3 trains at 96 St and between 2 trains at 135 St.

4/5 trains:

  • From 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, downtown 4/5 trains run local from 125 St to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall, and uptown 4/5 trains run local from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to Grand Central-42 St because of track maintenance between Grand Central and Brooklyn Bridge, switch work near 14 St and drain cleaning on the downtown express track between 125 St and Grand Central-42 St. As a reminder, 5 trains will not run overnight in Manhattan.

4/6 trains:

  • At all times until December 2018, 4/6 trains will skip 28 St in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 6 stations along Park Av South at 33 St or 23 St. Or, use the nearby 28 St R/W station. Local buses are also available along Lexington Av and Madison Av.

5 train:

  • From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, free shuttle buses will replace 5 trains between 149 St-Grand Concourse and E 180 St due to switch work near 149 St-Grand Concourse, track replacement between Freeman St and Simpson St, and between Intervale Av and Prospect Avenue. Free shuttle buses will run between 149 St and E 180 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 149 St-Grand Concourse and/or E 180 St.
  • From 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, and from 8:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, 5 trains will run every 20 minutes between Bowling Green and 149 St-Grand Concourse due to track maintenance between Grand Central and Brooklyn Bridge, switch work near 14 St and drain cleaning on the downtown express track between 125 St and Grand Central-42 St. 5 trains from Manhattan will skip 138 St-Grand Concourse. Take the 4 train instead. Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, 5 service will end early between E 180 St and Bowling Green. As an alternative, take the 2 and/or 5 trains.

A train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, downtown A trains will run express 168 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due to station enhancements at 163 St and 110 St. As an alternative, use an uptown A local or C to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 125 St, 145 St or 168 St. As a reminder, the 163 St-Amsterdam Av station is closed for renovations until September 2018.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, free shuttle buses will replace A trains between 181 St and Inwood-207 St due to track maintenance. A trains will run between 181 St in Manhattan and Lefferts Blvd/Rockaway Park in Queens. As an alternative, use 1 trains making nearby stops on St Nicholas Av between 181 St and 207 St. Transfer at 168 St. Free shuttle buses will run along two routes: on Broadway, between 181 St and Inwood-207 St, and on Fort Washington Av, between 181 St and 190 St. Transfer between trains and buses at 181 St.

A/C trains:

  • At all times until September 2018, A and C trains skip 163 St-in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 168 St A and C , 155 St A and C, or 157 St 1 instead. Use M3, M100 or M101 buses and transfer to the at 168 St or 155 St with MetroCard. Need to transfer to another bus? Ask the M3, M100 or M101 driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which is valid on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 168 St or 155 St for a transfer to the bus.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, downtown A trains run local from 59 St-Columbus Circle to W 4 St- Wash Sq, and downtown A and C trains are rerouted via the F line from W 4 St-Wash Sq to Jay St-MetroTech due to track replacement in the Cranberry Tube. For service to Spring St, Canal St, and Chambers St, take the E via transfer at W 4 St-Wash Sq. For service to Fulton St, take the J via transfer at Delancey-Essex Sts. For service to High St, use the nearby York St F station. As a reminder, C trains do not run overnight.

A/S trains:

  • At all times until Monday, Sept. 3, A service will be suspended in both directions between Broad Channel and Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. due to a flood protection project in the Rockaways. During this closure, A service will operate between Inwood-207th St. and Broad Channel, and via the S to/from Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. S shuttle trains will run between Rockaway Park-Beach 116th St. and Beach 90th St., and via the A to/from Far Rockaway-Mott Ave. For Far Rockaway/Mott Ave.-bound service take the S via transfer at Beach 90th St.

B train:

  • Beginning 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, B service will end early due to signal modernization. As an alternative, B line customers should take the C, D and/or Q instead. As a reminder, B service does not run on weekends.

B/C trains:

  • At all times until September 2018, B and C trains will skip Cathedral Parkway-110th St. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, walk to the nearby B and C stations at 116th St. and 103rd St., along Fredrick Douglas Blvd/Central Park West. Or take the 1 at 110th St., along Broadway. Use the M10 bus along Fredrick Douglas Blvd and transfer to the B and C (A overnight) at 116th St. or 103rd St. with MetroCard. If you need to transfer to another bus, ask the M10 bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer, which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 116 St or 103 St for a transfer to the bus.
  • At all times until late October 2018, B and C trains will skip 72nd and 86th streets in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project.
    • For service to/from 72 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 59 St-Columbus Circle. Or take the 1/2/3 at, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 59 St with MetroCard.
    • For service to/from 86 St, use nearby B/C stations at 81 St-Museum of Natural History and 96 St. Or take the 1/2/3 at 86 St, along Broadway. Use an M10 bus along Frederick Douglass Blvd and transfer to the B/C (A overnight) at 81 St or 96 St with MetroCard.
    • For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the M10 bus operator for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at 81 St, 59 St, or 96 St for a transfer to the bus.

B/D trains:

  • At all times until December 2018, B and D trains will skip 174-175 Sts in both directions due to MTA’s Enhanced Station Initiative project. As an alternative, customers are advised to use the nearby Tremont Av or 170 St B/D stations. Use the Bx1 or Bx2 along Grand Concourse and transfer to B or D trains at Tremont Av or 170 St with a MetroCard. For either station, if you need to transfer to another bus, ask the driver for a MetroCard Bus Transfer which can be used on your next local bus ride within two hours. On your return trip, ask the station agent at the Tremont Av or 170 St stations for a transfer to the bus.

C train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, and from 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, and Sunday, Aug. 26, downtown C trains run express from 168 St to 59 St-Columbus Circle due station enhancements at 163 St and 110 St. As an alternative, use an uptown A local, or C, to complete your trip. Transfer at 59 St-Columbus Circle, 125 St, 145 St, or 168 St.

D train:

  • From 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, F, N, Q and R trains and free shuttle buses will replace D trains between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and 34 St-Herald Sq due to track replacement north of DeKalb Av. D trains will run as follows: between Coney Island-Stillwell Av and Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr (express between Atlantic Av and 36 St) and between 34 St-Herald Sq and Norwood-205 St. Free shuttle buses will run between W 4 St-Wash Sq Grand St, stopping at B’way-Lafayette St. For service between Manhattan and Brooklyn, take the N, Q or R via transfer at Herald Sq and/or Atlantic Av-Brclays Ctr. For service to W 4 St-Wash Sq, take the F via transfer at 34 St-Herald Sq.
  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, uptown D trains skip 155 St, 161 St, 167 St and 170 St due to station enhancements at 167 St and 174-175 Sts. As an alternative, use a downtown D train to complete your trip. Transfer at Tremont Av or 145 St. As a reminder, the 174-175 Sts station is closed for extensive renovations until December 2018.

E train:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Jamaica Center-bound E trains skip 75 Av and Briarwood due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound E or F to complete your trip. Transfer at Jamaica-Van Wyck , Union Tpke, or 71 Av.

E/R trains:

  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Jamaica Center-bound E and 71 Av-bound R trains run express from Queens Plaza to 71 Av due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound E local or R to complete your trip. Transfer at 71 Av, Roosevelt Av, or Queens Plaza. As a reminder, R trains do not run in Queens overnight.

F train:

  • At all times until December 2018, F trains will skip 57 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use nearby stations at 57 St-7 Av N/Q/R/W, 5 Av/59 St N/R/W, 7 Av B/D/E, 5 Av/53 St E/M or 47-50 Sts B/D/F/M. Local buses are also available along 5 Av, 6 Av and 57 St.
  • From 10:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Jamaica-bound F trains are rerouted via the A from Jay St-MetroTech to W 4 St-Wash Sq, then via the E to Roosevelt Av due to electrical signals and switch improvements between the uptown local and express 6 Av line tracks near the W 4 St-Wash Sq station. As an alternative, use the D, J or Q Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound F train to complete your trip. Use A/C/E stations along 8 Av, or transfer at Jay St-MetroTech, Fulton St , W 4 St, Times Sq-42 St/Port Authority, 7 Av, or Roosevelt Av.
  • From 11:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Jamaica Center-bound F trains skip 75 Av, Briarwood and Sutphin Blvd due to signal modernization along the Queens Boulevard Line. As an alternative, use a Manhattan-bound E or F to complete your trip. Transfer at Parsons Blvd, Union Tpke, or 71 Av.

F/M trains:

  • At all times until December 2018, F/M trains will skip 23 St in both directions due to due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. The 23 St F/M station opened around the time of World War II, in December 1940. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby 34 St-Herald Sq or 14 St F/M stations along 6 Av. Or, use the nearby 23 St R/W station on Broadway. Local buses are also available along 6 Av and 7 Av.

G train:

  • From 9:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Church Av-bound G trains skip Bedford Nostrand Avs due to station maintenance. As an alternative, use a Court Sq-bound G train. Transfer at Classon Av or Myrtle-Willoughby Avs.

J train:

  • At all times until Summer 2018, Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J trains skip 121st St. due to station rehabilitation work. For service to this station, take the J to Sutphin Blvd. and transfer to a Broad S.t-bound J. As a reminder, Broad St.-bound J trains skip 121st St. from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. on weekdays; take the Z instead. For service from this station, take the J to 111st St. and transfer to a Jamaica Center-bound J.
  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, free shuttle buses replace J trains between Myrtle Av and Crescent St due to station improvements at Broadway Junction. J service will operate in two sections: between Broad St and Myrtle Av, and via the M to/from Metropolitan Av, and between Crescent St and Jamaica Center. Free shuttle buses will provide alternate service, and make all J line station stops between Myrtle Av and Crescent St. Transfer between trains and free shuttle buses at Myrtle Av and/or Crescent St. Or transfer between A/C/L trains and shuttle buses at Broadway Junction. As a reminder, the Jamaica Center Parsons/Archer-bound J platforms at 104 St and 121 St are closed for renovations until late Summer 2018.

M train:

  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, M service is suspended due to station improvements including the installation of new concrete for a new mezzanine floor at Broadway Junction. Special J trains will provide alternate service and operate between Broad St and Metropolitan Av. As a reminder, M service ends early between 71 Av and Delancey-Essex Sts on Friday night.

N train:

  • At all times until fall 2018, Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N trains skip Fort Hamilton Pkwy, New Utrecht Ave., 18th Av., 20th Ave., Kings Hwy, Avenue U and 86th St. due to station rehabilitation work at nine stations on the Sea Beach Line.
    • For service from these stations, take a Manhattan-bound N to Bay Pkwy or 8th Ave. and transfer to a Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N.
    • For New Utrecht Ave.-62 St., take the D. Transfer between N and D trains at 36th St. or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave.
    • For service to these stations, take the Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. bound N to Bay Pkwy or Coney Island-Stillwell Ave. and transfer to a Manhattan-bound N.
  • At all times until February 2019, N trains will skip Broadway and 39th Ave. in both directions due to MTA's Enhanced Station Initiative project. For alternate service during this closure, use the nearby open Astoria line stations at 30th Ave., 36th Ave., or Queensboro Plaza via the Q102 bus.
  • At all times until July 2019, N trains will run local in both directions between 59 St and 36 St in Brooklyn due to structural rehabilitation work to repair and replace steel columns, lighting, ventilators, and deteriorated concrete, and perform water mitigation work to address water seepage in the express tunnel between the 59 St and 36 St stations. N trains will stop at 53 St and 45 St in both directions.
  • From 9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Astoria-bound N trains skip 30 Av and 36 Av due to station enhancements Ditmars Blvd, Broadway and 39 Av. As an alternative, use a Coney Island-Stillwell Av bound N train to complete your trip. Transfer at Astoria Blvd or Queensboro Plaza. As a reminder, due to ongoing station renovations, N trains skip Broadway and 39 Av in both directions at all times until February 2019.
  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, N trains run local in both directions between Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr and 36 St due to track replacement near DeKalb Av.

N/Q trains:

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, Manhattan-bound N and Q trains are rerouted via the R line (Lower Manhattan) from Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr to Canal St due to track replacement. Astoria-bound N trains will make station stops at DeKalb Av, Jay St-MetroTech, Court St, Whitehall St, Rector St, Cortlandt St, and City Hall.

R train:

  • From 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, free shuttle buses and the N replace R trains between Bay Ridge-95 St and 36 St due to station enhancements at 86 St. R service runs days/evenings between 71 Av and 36 St, Brooklyn, and is rerouted via the D to/from 9 Av, the last stop. Free shuttle buses make all R stops between Bay Ridge-95 St and 59 St all weekend. Late night R service between Brooklyn and Whitehall St is suspended - take the N and/or free shuttle buses instead. Transfer between N trains and free shuttle buses at 59 St, and/or between N and R trains at 36 St.
