NEW YORK CITY – The slush puddles are drowning New York City's crosswalks.

An informal survey of Patch readers reported calf-deep lakes of icy water pooling at cross streets across the city as 18 inches of snow melts.

A common bane on city pedestrians, the puddles are somehow just too wide to leap and are always lapping just above boot height.

"There was 6” of slush on both sides of the crossing," said one reader who reported a puddle at E 33rd St and Third Avenue in Murray Hill. "In general there are uncrossable rivers of water."

Another said navigating a puddle outside the B/Q subway station at Church Avenue and 18th Street was death-defying.

"Walking into the street to go around the puddle at the corner, you take your life in your hands," the reader said.

At W. 95th Street and Columbus Avenue somebody reported seeing "a senior citizen wade through knee-deep water after realizing too late how deep the puddle was."

Adding to the icy mess was the amount of trash the melting snow washed into the crosswalks – coupled with overflowing garbage cans that sanitation crews were unable to empty.

"It's absolutely disgusting," said reader Caleb Pan of the intersection of Church Avenue and E. 18th Street in Flatbush.
