Staten Island Ponies Detained By NYPD For Prancing Around In Snowstorm

Two miniature horses escaped captivity on Staten Island to prance around in the snowstorm Tuesday morning. But their freedom was fleeting.

STATEN ISLAND, NY — Two miniature horses who neighbors say escaped from a home on Woods of Arden Road along the island's south shore Tuesday morning enjoyed a brief prance through the day's underwhelming snowstorm before being detained by the NYPD.

Around 10:20 a.m., local school board president and former NYPD lieutenant Michael Reilly posted a photo of the ponies roaming free near Richmond Avenue and Hylan Boulevard.

Another witness then spotted the pair rounding a corner near Hylan and Preston — altogether shirking a "wind advisory" issued by the National Weather Service and instead allowing Winter Storm Stella's 35 mph to 50 mph gusts to tickle their manes.

The Staten Island ponies pranced through Stella's slush as if it were a bed of mountain wildflowers on a summer day:

But alas, their jaunt was short-lived.

By 11:20 a.m., the ponies had been detained by police officers from the 123rd precinct and "safely returned to their owners," according to the NYPD.

May their spirits remain unbroken.
