Transport Workers Call Mayor 'Liar,' Demand City Fund Subway Fixes

A union ad references a recent incident in which the mayor's staff allegedly lied after a subway car may have been held for him.

NEW YORK CITY, NY – A new ad from the city’s union of subway and bus workers calls Mayor Bill de Blasio a liar and urges him to spend city funds on repairing the subway.

The ad, published in Monday’s Daily News, references a recent incident in which the mayor’s staff allegedly lied after a subway car may have been held for him.

The Transport Workers Union — viewed as an ally of Gov. Andrew Cuomo — also calls on de Blasio to heed the governor’s call for the city and state to split the $836 million cost of emergency subway repairs.

“Stop holding up trains and stop holding up repairs that will end the Summer of Hell!” the ad blares.

TWU also has taken out a TV ad urging the mayor to share the cost of the repairs — though de Blasio has rejected that request, saying the state took away money the city meant for the MTA and directed it to other causes.

City Hall called TWU's new ad misleading.

“This ad ignores an important fact that City riders aren’t going to look past — the State has siphoned from the MTA the exact dollar amount the MTA is seeking in additional operating costs. It’s imperative the State return those funds to riders,” a spokesperson told NY1.

The station noted that TWU has previously targeted de Blasio over funding and bus driver arrests.
