"The city is in mourning and the family of the NYPD is in mourning," Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a news conference Friday evening. "We lost a very good man, a very devoted man, a man who dedicated his life to protecting us."

Police officers responded to a 911 call at 2:45 p.m. about an armed man who had broken into a house in Parkchester. The man, who police allege was Rosales, was the estranged husband of a 29-year-old woman staying at the home. While en route, dispatchers advised responding officers the man had left in a red Jeep and police officers pursued.

Multiple officers approached the man's vehicle as it came to a stop near 1575 Bronx River Avenue in the Van Nest section of the Bronx, about a half mile from the attempted break-in, and exchanged gunfire with the suspect. Two officers were struck, including Tuozzolo.

Authorities recovered a .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun police say Rosales used to shoot and kill Tuozzolo.

"Every day, the brave men and women of law enforcement selflessly serve our communities to keep the rest of us safe. Today, a sergeant in the New York City Police Department has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, and another officer is undergoing treatment," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "My deepest sympathies are with the families of the officers involved in today’s tragedy in the Bronx, and with Commissioner O’Neill and the NYPD as they cope with the loss of one of their own."

A full investigation into the shooting is underway, police said.
