NEW YORK CITY ? An NYPD officer repeatedly hammered punches over a youth's head during a melee in Staten Island that was captured in a now-viral video.

The as-yet-unidentified officer has been suspended pending an internal investigation, said Mayor Eric Adams and police officials Wednesday ? a day after the incident along Port Richmond Avenue near IS 51.

The fight and suspension were confirmed by the NYPD's Twitter account. But police officials refused to provide Patch further information about the incident because, they said, it was under an Internal Affairs Bureau investigation.

Adams provided more information during an unrelated ? and colorful ? news conference.

He said officers responded to a report that a girl had been jumped by two other children.

The video first posted on Instagram picks up at some point after the cops arrived. It shows an officer repeatedly punch a girl in a hammering motion.

"He's hitting her?" a voice can be heard on the video. "What the f---?"

The girl is 12 years old, the New York Daily News reported. She, along with her 14-year-old sister, had assaulted another girl, 14, according to the report.
