Video: Sanitation Head Bartends For Coronavirus-Weary NYC Nurses

A Sanitation Department deputy chief set up a free and open bar for Elmhurst Hospital nurses amid the COVID-19 pandemic, new video shows.

NEW YORK CITY — Never trash a good bartender, even if he's with the city's Sanitation Department.

New York City Sanitation Deputy Chief James McGovern served much-needed drinks last week to a grateful troupe of hospital nurses, working on the frontline of the battle against novel coronavirus, Twitter video shows.

"You girls worked hard all week," McGovern told the Elmhurst Hospital nurses, who ran toward the booze-stocked trunk of car. "You want a libation."

Elmhurst Hospital — which serves the epicenter of New York City's outbreak, Corona, Queens — has been slammed by the pandemic and was among the first to report surpassing capacity.

Health care workers from across the city and nation have since flocked to provide support to the Queens hospital.

Video shows the thirsty nurses sprinting toward the car, then telling McGovern where they're from as they pick out their drinks of choice.

"Thank you!" cries one nurse through her blue mask.
