NYC Weather: Memorial Day Weekend Expected To Be Washout

Rain and cool temperatures threaten to wash out much of this holiday weekend, although weather could rebound on Memorial Day itself.

NEW YORK CITY — Swap out the sunscreen for a raincoat this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Rain and chilly weather threaten to put a damper on New York City's unofficial start of summer, according to the National Weather Service's forecast.

From Friday afternoon until Sunday night, the city will be under clouds and the chance of rain, the forecast states. Highs will only be 55 degrees on Saturday and 60 degrees on Sunday, forecasters predict.

But the weekend might not be a total wash out. Memorial Day's forecast calls for sun and warmer temperatures.

"Mostly sunny, with a high near 72," the forecast states.

The greatest threat of rain is Friday night, which has 100 percent chance of precipitation, according to the forecast. Rainfall could reach 1 to 2 inches and wind gusts threaten to be as high as 29 mph, forecasters warn.

The sour weather likely will continue into Saturday.

Friday
Rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 65. East wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Friday Night
Rain. The rain could be heavy at times. Low around 50. Northeast wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Saturday
Rain. High near 55. Northeast wind around 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Saturday Night
Rain likely, mainly before 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 51. Northeast wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Sunday
Rain likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Northeast wind around 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

A 30 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 52.

Memorial Day
Mostly sunny, with a high near 72.
