6 Tips For Easing Serious Illness
Having a severe illness is hard enough. Northwell Health wants to help make navigating treatment less overwhelming.

Are you battling a severe illness? Here are six ways to make your experience easier and less stressful, according to the experts at Northwell Health:
1. Bring someone to medical appointments
Take a family member or close friend to medical appointments. Having a trusted loved one by your side helps ensure no medical information is overlooked during this highly emotional time.

2. Avoid playing online MD
An Internet search doesn’t always point to the most credible information. Ask members of your medical team if they can provide educational handouts or recommend trusted resources on the Internet. If you want to learn more about a certain type of cancer, for example, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network offers credible, easy-to-understand information.
3. Get documentation
Create an at-home filing system for copies of your health record, test results and prescriptions. Keep a medication list that includes the name of each prescription, over-the-counter drug and supplement you take. Note the dosage and how often and why you take the medication.

4. Ask questions
You need to understand what each treatment entails. If your doctor recommends chemotherapy or radiation therapy, ask about the frequency of treatment, as well as its side effects. Understanding these factors can help you weigh your options more effectively.
5. Keep a treatment journal
Note how you’re feeling and write down questions as they come. Bring your journal to each appointment and discuss your notes with your physician. If you’re struggling with side effects from your illness or treatment, ask about supportive services, such as acupuncture or nutritional counseling.

6. Rely on your supports
You don’t have to face your diagnosis alone. Talk to your family, friends, medical team and community. Support groups that connect you and your family members with others experiencing similar situations are great places to ask questions and discuss how you’re coping with your illness and treatment.
