Dogs Now Allowed at Certain North Hempstead Parks

The parks are dog-friendly for a six month trial period.

Local parks have just gotten more dog-friendly.

A six month trial period will allow dogs to enter certain North Hempstead Parks:

  • North Hempstead Beach Park
  • Mary Jane Davies Green
  • Michael J. Tully Park
  • Hempstead Harbor Trail

Dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on a short leash, are accompanied by a handler and dog waste is disposed of properly.

If they stay on their best behavior, the Town of North Hempstead will decide whether to keep the parks open to dogs permanently.

“This is a move forward towards making our parks more dog-friendly,” Supervisor Judi Bosworth said.

Residents who plan on taking advantage of the new initiative must heed the new signs posted by Parks Commissioner Jill Weber regarding the regulations in each park.

Once the six month trial period is over, the Town of North Hempstead will decide whether North Hempstead parks should remain open to dogs for good.
