Keeping the Memories of our Fallen Heroes Alive

National Poppy Day, May 28, 2021

As we all know, our precious freedoms were not merely assimilated. They were earned by others, on beaches and battlefields. May 28, 2021, the Friday before Memorial Day, has been designated as National Poppy Day. How did this custom originate, you may ask? After World War I, the poppy flourished in Europe. In 1918, a woman named Moina Michael asked Americans to always wear a poppy flower in memory of the war dead. This blood-red icon symbolizing the sacrifices made by fallen service members, has become an enduring symbol of honor for the sacrifices of our veterans from the battlefields of Europe in World War I to today’s global war on terror . “In Flanders Fields” (depicting where the poppies blow, between the crosses, row on row…) is a war poem written during World War I by Canadian doctor, Lt. Col. John McCrae to honor soldiers killed in battle, and to never forget.

Veterans and volunteers handcraft the poppies to distribute and accept donations to help veterans, military, and their families in our communities. The American Legion Auxiliary started the Poppy Program in 1921, connecting the visual image of the poppy with the service of our veterans.

The American Legion Auxiliary’s mission is as follows: In the spirit of Service Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace, and security.

Where does your poppy donation money go? Last year, $5 bought books for hospitalized veterans; $10 provided transportation for veterans to the VA hospital; $25 bought a veteran clothing for a job interview; and $50 provided a holiday dinner for a veteran’s family.

Eligibility for Membership has broadened! As of August 2019, membership in the American Legion Auxiliary, which up to that time had been an all-female organization, has been extended to include ALL spouses (female or male) of U.S. veterans and service members who meet the American Legion eligibility requirements, i.e. married to an active or honorably-discharged veteran who is a member of the American Legion. This amendment makes the American Legion Auxiliary the largest and most inclusive volunteer organization supporting our veterans, children and youth.
