Long Island Heroes Honored by Canine Companions for Independence

100's Expected for Emotional Veterans Day Ceremony in New Hyde Park on Nov. 7th

Join Canine Companions for Independence as we present the seventh annual Outstanding Service Award to 6 local veterans who go above and beyond to help our heroes who have sacrificed so much in order for us to continue to enjoy our rights and freedoms.

Back in 1944, 25 year old Jim Uvena didn’t know if he’d see his 26th birthday, let alone his 100th! The 12th Armored Division Sgt. P4 drove a Sherman tank on D-Day, and his actions were so heroic, he was awarded the French Medal of Honor for helping liberate that country. Uvena grew up in Huntington where he still lives today with May, his wife of 66 years.

Air Force Veteran and retired Port Authority Police Officer Ken Hernandez has served his country and his local community. Now with Service Dog Miller by his side, Ken can continue his active lifestyle! “I am just in awe of what Miller is capable of. Just getting around is difficult, and I need help when I am home alone. Miller is always there for me!”
