New Hyde Park Coronavirus Update: May 4

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — The spread of coronavirus in New Hyde Park has climbed to 251 cases, while North New Hyde Park reported nearly 400, according according to figures published Sunday by Nassau County. In New York state, Nassau County's 36,780 confirmed coronavirus cases is second only to the outbreak in New York City. A recent study of 15,000 New York state residents showed 11.4 percent of Long Islanders tested positive for antibodies indicating they'd been infected by COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus.

To date, Nassau County's coronavirus-related deaths has reached 2,194. Here's a breakdown of the Hicksville area's confirmed COVID-19 cases as of Sunday:

• New Hyde Park: 251
• North New Hyde Park: 388
• Floral Park: 255
• Garden City Park: 185

TESTING INFO

Those interested in being tested for COVID-19 can use the county health department's online screening tool to share symptom and pre-register for testing. A hotline is also available for questions at 1-888-364-3065, as well as an email form.

Drive-thru test sites have been established across Long Island. These facilities reduce density and the potential for spread by keeping sick and at-risk people out of health care facilities where they could infect others.

The drive-thru sites are prioritizing people showing symptoms and who are among the highest risk population and those who have been in close contact with someone with the disease, as well as health care workers, nursing home workers and first responders.
Testing is by appointment only. Test results are sent to people by phone or text, and can be found using an online portal.

SCHOOLS

Along with all nonessential businesses, all state school buildings will be closed until at least May 15. On Friday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that New York public schools will stay closed for the rest of the spring semester.

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Union Free School District is using remote learning techniques via Google Classroom to teach children.

CANCELLATIONS/CLOSURES

All Town of North Hempstead facilities remain closed to the public until at least May 12. Essential services, such as 311, the Clerk's office and sanitation will continue to operate.

Parks facilities and all town parks — including playgrounds, sports fields and bathrooms — are closed to the public. This also includes town beaches and the Town Dock. The closures will help prevent the gathering of large groups and congregation of people in close proximity to each other.
The Town's Building Department will be closed until May 12. The department is open for transactions related to "Essential Business" and issuance of permits related to emergency repairs only.

The Town's Tax Office has temporarily suspended in-person services. Residents are asked to make tax payments through the online payment system or through mail. There will be no local community tax collection sites this Spring.

The "What to Know Before Buying and Selling a Home" programs scheduled for May 21 and May 28 were canceled.

The Town run Senior Project Independence programs and exercise classes are canceled until May 12.

Community Service programming was canceled through May 16.

Project Independence's Joint Advisory program scheduled for Wednesday, April 29 was canceled.
The Town's Sunday residential drop-off at the North Hempstead Transfer Station was closed through April 26.

Spring Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P) events scheduled for April 25-26 were postponed.
Town bid openings and RFP proposal deadlines will be rescheduled and extended.

The Town's Spring Fest, Asian American Fest, and Memorial Day Commemoration will not be held this year.

The Town's Women's Roll of Honor scheduled for March 25 was postponed indefinitely.

AARP Defensive Driving Classes scheduled for April 18, May 16 and June 13 were canceled.

The Town's sustainability classes scheduled for April were canceled.

The St. Francis Hospital Outreach Bus and Audiology Hearing Van dates were canceled through April 23.

The Town's Project Independence and You Radio shows was canceled through April 24.

Mashadi Senior Program was canceled through April 20.

NYU Winthrop Hospital canceled all community outreach programs through May 6.

The Diocese of Rockville Centre announced that all funerals, weddings and other services at Catholic churches across Long Island are canceled. In March, the Diocese said all masses for a month — including all Holy Week and Easter services — would be canceled due to the coronavirus.
