New Hyde Park Grade Crossing Out, New Bridge In
The Covert Avenue grade crossing has been removed after a weekend full of construction and transit headaches.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY — After a weekend full of construction and transit headaches, the Covert Avenue grade crossing in New Hyde Park is no more.
Instead, thousands of Long Island Rail Road travelers crossed over a new 1,200-ton bridge as part of the LIRR Expansion Project. The bridge holds three tracks and a two-lane underpass for vehicle traffic. It also includes a pedestrian sidewalk.
"The Covert Avenue grade crossing has been eliminated and train service has been restored between Hicksville & New Hyde Park," the transit agency tweeted around 5:15 a.m. Monday. "Thank you for your patience."

Installing the new bridge and removing the grade crossing forced the MTA to suspend all train service between Hicksville and New Hyde Park over the weekend. The project will improve service reliability along the Main Line, the MTA said.
Covert Avenue will reopen in the fall, Newsday reported.
