NEW HYDE PARK, NY — In what can only be summed up as a child's dream dinner, a new eatery has opened in New Hyde Park, serving up rolls of ice cream that can even be served on a bun, hot dog-style.

Sweet Charlie's opened its first New York location Aug. 8 in New Hyde Park, serving up Thai-style rolled ice cream creations with an enviable variety of customizable mix-ins. Newsday first reported the opening, dubbing the hot dog-style dish a "reasonable facsimile of a hot dog," that's as "difficult as it is pointless."

The ice cream parlor, founded in Philadelphia by a college freshman and named after his dog, has expanded in four years to nearly 20 locations spanning several states. The growth comes as many other Thai-inspired ice cream shops pop up around the world after videos capturing the making of the treat went viral.

"At Sweet Charlie’s we make ice cream and frozen yogurt the way it should be," the eatery writes on its website. "Each ice cream or frozen yogurt is made to order on a super, cold surface that is below 20 degrees. Because the surface is so cold, very small ice crystals are formed quickly. These ice crystals create the freshest, healthiest, most delicious end product."

Sweet Charlies' "chefs" then add mix-ins and chop, smooth and roll the now-frozen ice cream into the picture-perfect rolls.

Kyle Billig, the founder of Sweet Charlie's, told Patch in an email that "we are excited that this location is serving ALL of our new products offerings," including warm cookies and Belgian waffles. The New Hyde Park location also boasts a full coffee bar, so customers can get their daily caffeine fix while indulging in some sweet treats.

When asked about the challenges of opening a new location during the pandemic, Billig said that "Sweet Charlie's is usually an interactive experience. We love talking to guest while they watch their order being prepared right before their eyes."

To maintain this experience while maintaining the safety of workers and guests, Billig said Sweet Charlie's worked to "tailor the experience a bit" by launching a mobile app and website through which customers can order their treats from home for a contactless experience.

Those looking to fully indulge can try the Tall Charlie, a dessert hot dog patented by Sweet Charlie's and consisting of a 6-inch ice cream roll tucked into a long, fresh-baked glazed doughnut. Others can get creative with their rolled ice cream creations by making full use of Sweet Charlie's' 11 flavors and wide-ranging toppings, and even others can opt for the ice cream parlor's different menu items, including milkshakes, Belgian waffles and warm cookies.
