Town Of North Hempstead's First Dog Park To Open

The Town of North Hempstead is slated to open its first dog park at at Michael J. Tully Park later in June.

NEW HYDE PARK, NY—Town of North Hempstead dogs, as well as their owners, will be pleased.

The first-ever North Hempstead dog park's grand opening is set for Thursday, June 27 at 10 a.m.,Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town announced. The dog park, located at Michael J. Tully Park in New Hyde Park, features separate areas for small and large dogs.

"We are excited to welcome our furry four-legged friends to the first ever North Hempstead Park built just for them," Bosworth stated via press release. "This state-of-the-art dog park truly was collaborative project between the Town and the residents. Many ideas from local dog owners and residents were incorporated into the plan which helped to make this wonderful and innovative dog park. We hope it brings hours and hours of pleasure to both dogs and their owners."

The park was built by D.F. Stone. Both the large dog and small dog areas include artificial turf and pea gravel. Benches, a shade structure, as well as water fountains for both dogs and their owners are all features.

A tunnel and jump obstacles, among other play structures, are available for dogs' pleasure, and were donated by the Shelter Connection (a non-profit that works with the Town’s Animal Shelter).

"Our boy Otis is super excited to experience the brand new dog park," Sandra “Dee” Cerrone, a resident who advocated for the dog park, stated. "We are grateful to the Town of North Hempstead for hearing us out and making this vision a reality. WOOF WOOF!"

Dogs are already welcome at many Town of North Hempstead parks, including North Hempstead Beach Park, Hempstead Harbor Trail, Mary Jane Davies Green and Michael J. Tully Park. However, the new dog park is the first one in the Town that's built primarily for dogs.

Michael J. Tully Park is located at 1401 Evergreen Avenue in New Hyde Park.
