New Rochelle police offer a secure way to dispose of unused prescription drugs at any time day or night in the lobby of the police station.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Local residents don't have to guess the safest way to dispose of unused prescription drugs — the New Rochelle Police Department will handle the tricky task.

A secure 24-hour medication drop box is located in the lobby of the New Rochelle Police Department, located at 475 North Avenue. For many New Rochelle residents, the drop box is the most convenient, secure and environmentally friendly way to get rid of unused medicines.

The Westchester County Department of Environmental Facilities (DEF) will also provide an opportunity to dispose of unused medication in the region. Unlike the all-hours box available at the police station, unused medications can be dropped off at the Household-Material Recovery Facility (H-MREF) only during limited hours. The drop-off location will be open on National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The facility is located at 15 Woods Road in Valhalla. DEF also accepts medications, by appointment, on the first Tuesday of every month. More information on scheduling an appointment can be found here.

In 2020, DEF collected and properly disposed of nearly 6,000 pounds of prescription and over-the-counter drugs at the H-MREF, keeping them from being misused or flushed into the waterways to harm ecosystems.
