Air Quality Alert Issued For Parts Of Hudson Valley

When pollution levels are elevated, health officials recommend at-risk individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Above-normal temperatures and calm winds have contributed to poor air quality around parts of the lower Hudson Valley.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation issued an air quality health advisory for Westchester and Rockland counties. The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to midnight Monday.

Air quality levels are predicted to be greater than an air quality index value of 100 for fine particles. The air quality index was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the air quality index value, the greater the health concern.

When pollution levels are elevated, the state Department of Health recommends individuals limit strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.

People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their physician.
