Heat Advisories Issued For Hudson Valley

High temperatures and high humidity will make for dangerous weather conditions.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Be prepared, because heat advisories have been issued for the Hudson Valley Monday. With forecast temperatures in the 90s, the addition of high humidity is going to make for some uncomfortable — if not dangerous — weather.

The National Weather Service said a heat advisory for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties will be in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Heat index values up to 100 are expected.

A heat advisory for Columbia, Dutchess and eastern Ulster counties will be in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. Heat index values will range from the mid-90s to lower 100s.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur, the weather service said.

A heat advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.

Health experts said to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

The National Weather Service said:

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
