Juneteenth Celebration at Paine Cottage
Sat, Jun 19th, sounds of Broadway musicians, an artist exhibit, Capoeira dancers, children's activities & more for a Juneteenth event.
This Saturday, June 19th, the sounds of Broadway musicians, internationally & nationally recognized artists and the Capoeira Center of New Rochelle join the Huguenot & New Rochelle Historical Association in celebrating Juneteenth.
The Historical Association joins the City of New Rochelle & the Lincoln Park Conservancy to bring a community wide Juneteenth Celebration – Passion & Perseverance.
Following events at New Rochelle City Hall, the Thomas Paine Cottage, 20 Sicard Ave New Rochelle, NY, begins their celebration at 3pm until 6pm with family events of arts & crafts & a scavenger hunt with prizes. Food selections include free samplings at the Red food dessert table and a BYO picnic area. Purchase food includes New Rochelle's 914 Kitchen & Mickey Dubbs frozen custard. The Capoeira Center of NR will hold an interactive exhibition and the Paine Museum will be open for visitation with a special Juneteenth exhibit. All additional events can be found on their website.

Huguenot & NR Historical Association president, Gary Bush tells us “Our events focus on educating our community on the history of Juneteenth from its beginnings in Galveston, Texas to cities nationwide in a fun and engaging way. We have wonderful events planned and we invite our community & surrounding neighbors to come out and join us”
Across the street at 983 North Avenue, the Paine Memorial Building’s festivities include an art exhibit “Freedom” by nationally known local artist, Fred Spinowitz & Internationally recognized artist, H. Lloyd Weston, whose work can be found in Museums worldwide. Broadway sounds come to New Rochelle with singers from the pre-Broadway show, the Crossing and the Ten Crucial Days ~ The Musical. The show brings the voices of the common men & women of the revolution – farmers, enslaved people, freed black enlisted and women to life. Discussions on Thomas Paine’s views on slavery & the new Republic by Paine historian, Gary Berton & Dr. Michael Crowder, Iona College are also scheduled. Rarely seen Paine artifacts, from the TPNHA collection at Iona, will be on display. The day’s events close with a showing of the movie Soul Food at 7pm.
