The Larchmont Public Library Kicks off National Kite Flying Month with a Workshop for Kids
Larchmont Public Library: Children's Kite-Making Workshop
Young children between the ages of 8-11 gathered at the Larchmont Public Library on March 30, to learn how to make and fly kites in honor of April, National Kite Flying Month.
Head of Youth Services Rebecca Teglas said she hosted a kite flying workshop every year in order to make new kite-making enthusiasts.
“I really like the relaxation of being outdoors and flying kites,” Teglas said. “It’s just fun to do. It was something I enjoyed so I wanted to share with the children.”

The children leaned forward and watched YouTube videos with Teglas about different types of kites and various kite festivals. The kids threw out a variety of “ooohs” and “ahhhs” when they saw a video of the world’s biggest kite.
Teglas also taught the children about the basic physics behind flight, making the science fun and engaging for them.

“It’s also a good science teaching tool because of lift and Newton’s law of gravity,” Teglas said. “We lightly touch on it. It’s a school vacation week so we want to make it fun but touch a little bit on the science.”
The children sat down and built their kites with a piece of paper, wooden sticks and some well placed tape.
Once the kids finished, Teglas directed the children and the parents—who were nearby—to the front lawn of the library. She taught the kids how to fly kites while the parents watched happily.
“It’s a great program,” said mom Susana Sabage. “I love events like this, my son loves it too. I want him to learn how to make a kite. I want him to learn how to do something.”
Sabage is a regular at the library. She hopes for more activities in the future that are similar to the kite workshop.
The Larchmont Public Library hosts numerous events year round. Teglas said she had many repeat attendees at her programs.
