Linsey Davis wins Christopher Award for “The World is Awake”

The book written with Joseph Bottum and illustrated by Lucy Fleming will be celebrated at The Christophers' 70th annual gala.

Linsey Davis with Joseph Bottum and illustrator Lucy Fleming will receive a Christopher Award for The World is Awake: A Celebration of Everyday Blessings, (Zonderkidz/Harper Collins), a book for children kindergarten and up. Davis works in New Rochelle, N.Y., Bottum in Hot Springs, S.D. and Fleming in Stalybridge, Cheshire, UK. “The World is Awake” is one of 11 books for adults and young people to be honored on May 23rd at the 70th annual Christopher Awards in New York. The Christophers will also recognize creators of 9 feature films and TV/Cable programs.

The book is a lyrical, rhyming story for young children intended to make them feel safe and joyful, cradled in the hands of God. Paired with engaging illustrations by Lucy Fleming, “The World is Awake” will inspire children to be thankful for all of God's blessings that surround them, from nature in the backyard to the animals at the zoo. Davis’s three-year-old son served as her inspiration, and Psalm 118:24 is the blueprint of the book: "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Davis is an award-winning journalist with ABC. She first gained a love for writing from her mother. She hopes to encourage young readers to find the essence of God in the world around them. “The World is Awake” is her debut book. Her second children’s picture book release, “One Big Heart,” will be in August.

Bottum is a widely published American poet and essayist living among the pines of the Black Hills of South Dakota.

Fleming has been an avid doodler and book-worm since early childhood. Drawing always seemed like so much fun, but she never dreamed it could be a full time job. When not at her desk she prefers to be outdoors in the sunshine with a hot cup of tea.

The Christopher Awards were created in 1949 to celebrate authors, illustrators, writers, producers and directors whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit.” The Christophers, a nonprofit organization founded in 1945 by Maryknoll Father James Keller, is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition of service to God and humanity. The ancient Chinese proverb—“It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness”— guides its publishing, radio, and awards programs.
