Update: Lucky 'Nugget' Finds A Forever Home With His Rescuer

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A kitten saved during a harrowing three-hour-long rescue earlier this month, is finally going home with his champion.

On May 5, a kitten named Lucky Nugget found a savior in Mike Vaccaro — now, the cat has found a new home with the New Rochelle detective. According to a statement from the Humane Society of Westchester at New Rochelle, the new pet parent and fortunate feline are now part of a happy family.

Vaccaro happened to be in the parking lot of Chickens Gone Wild on Main Street in New Rochelle when he became aware that a kitten was trapped in a car engine of a parked car. What followed was a three-hour, intense rescue effort to save Nugget from the engine of the car. The job of extracting the kitten from the vehicle required help from Safeway Towing who lifted the car to allow access to the scared feline.

The kitten and the rescuer were said to have been no worse for wear following the life-saving heroics. Lucky Nugget (or Chicken Nugget as the folks at Chickens Gone Wild prefer as a moniker) was taken to the Humane Society of Westchester at New Rochelle to recover until the adoption was complete.

"Not only do we intervene when necessary to help human life, but we also step in to assist our four legged friends," the New Rochelle Police Benevolent Association wrote in a social media post singling out the detective's efforts. "Lucky Nugget, that's one down eight to go. Stay safe out there. Way to go New Rochelle Police Department Detective Vaccaro."

Nearly everyday there are examples of police going above and beyond to protect and serve even the most helpless among us, but it isn't very often that a cop offers a new loving home as part of the deal.
