Teens Choose to Watch Rather Than Read As Part of Mamaroneck Public Library's "Teen Scene" Program

Mamroneck Public Library is hosting a book to film series in an effort to show teens that stories can be enjoyed in both book and film form.

A hush fell over the room of teenagers as the first movie, Fahrenheit 451, of the Mamaroneck Public Library’s series of book to film adaptations started Sunday afternoon.

As part of the its “Teen Scene” programs, the library has chosen this week to be a week of films that were adapted from books geared toward young adults. The first being the previously mentioned Fahrenheit 451, followed by The Prestige on Wednesday at 5 p.m. and Empire of the Sun on Saturday at 2 p.m.

One of the teens who watched the story of Guy Montag, a fireman who has been ordered by the government to destroy every piece of literature he finds, was Daniel Benn, a sophomore at Mamaroneck High School. Benn, being of the belief that the book is always better than the movie, wanted to find out for himself if this was any different.

“I gotta say, that was definitely one of the better adaptations I have seen,” Benn said. “Personally, I think some of the character of the book was lost in the transition to film, but I cannot say I was disappointed by this movie at all.”

Andrew Price, a junior at Mamaroneck High School, wasn’t nearly as interested in seeing how well the story transitioned to film because he’s never even read the book.

“I really am not normally a fan of books. I’m always kinda relieved when I hear a really good story is being made into a movie.” Price said. “I can definitely see why this was made into a movie, the story is super interesting. Almost interesting enough to make me want to check out the book. Almost.”

Benn is excited about the rest of this week’s movie choices, having also read those books.

“When I heard the library was doing a book to movie series, I was afraid it was going to be movies like Twilight and Hunger Games. No offense to those who do like those movies, but they aren’t for me.” Benn said. “I sadly don’t think I’ll be able to make it to see The Prestige but I will definitely be here for Empire of the Sun on Saturday. It’s one of my all-time favorite books.”

Price, who was pleasantly surprised by the first movie, intends to be back for both movies this week.

“I’ve got nothing else to do this week other than school, so why not see a couple of good, free movies,” Price said. “If I’m as impressed, or even more impressed, with these next two movies, there might be a chance I’ll actually check the books out. Again, it is just a chance.”

Movies are not the only thing the library has to offer teens, or adults and children for that matter. All of the library’s programs and events can be found on its website.
