Eating Disorder Support Groups Help Teens, Adults, Families

Help for people with eating disorders and their families is available now. Connecting with people who really understand can be life changing

Christine Knorr Psychotherapy Associates, a specialized therapy practice in New City, announces new support groups for adolescents and adults with Binge Eating Disorder, Anorexia, Bulimia, and related conditions. In addition, the practice will also host support groups for parents of teens with eating disorders.

According to Knorr, “the Covid-19 crisis has caused eating disorder cases to spike. Many people have turned to food and exercise to cope with feelings of anxiety, and this has led down a dangerous road for so many. We are getting calls every day from parents who are worried about their kids who have lost a concerning amount of weight or who have started obsessing about their appearance”. According to Bernadette Kowalchuck, an eating disorder therapist at Christine Knorr Psychotherapy Associates, “eating disorders affect people from all walks of life, and people with eating disorders come in all weights, shapes, and sizes. If your relationship with food or your body has become an issue that is affecting your life, help is available”.

Christine Knorr Psychotherapy Associates offers separate groups for teens and adults. The groups will begin in mid-December so that participants can receive support during the school break and throughout the holiday season. They will meet online, so that participants can get support from anywhere while staying healthy and safe. Groups will focus on topics such as healthy coping, body image, and skill building for recovery.

In addition, the practice offers an online support group just for parents who have a teen or a young adult with an eating disorder. According to Hannah Smith, an eating disorder therapist at Christine Knorr Psychotherapy Associates, “parents often feel alone in their struggle. They come to us feeling overwhelmed and worried about what to do. This group gives them a place to talk and a place to learn about how to help their child”.
