Nyack Schools Send Out Survey On New Mascot Name
The Nyack Mascot Committee narrowed down a long list of names and now it's time to vote.

NYACK, NY — Tasked with picking a new mascot now that the Indians name has been retired, a committee of Nyack students, officials and community members is asking residents, alumni and friends to take a survey.
The Nyack Mascot Committee wants something that's original, that can be the focus of a good logo, and that honors the Nyack community's tradition, pride, commitment and excellence.
The committee narrowed down many name suggestions to 11. Now it's time to vote.

The survey asks people to rank their top 5 choices with 1 being their top choice, 2 their second choice, etc. Check it out here.
The Nyack Board of Education voted unanimously in August to retire the district's nickname of "Nyack Indians" following recent nationwide protests that have led to a heightened awareness regarding race relations.

The district stopped using an Indian mascot in 2003 but kept the name. The change affects not just sports teams but entities such as the Nyack High School Indianettes cheerleading team.
A change.org petition to change the name received nearly 3,000 signatures, while a petition to keep it received nearly 500.
