Officer Injured During Marijuana Arrest In Nyack

Police said the Orangeburg resident tried to run away down Franklin Street.

NYACK, NY — A police officer stopped a man who was smoking what appeared to be marijuana on the street in Nyack at 11:13 a.m. Friday. The man suddenly turned and ran away.

During the chase that ensued on Franklin Street, the man turned and began to fight with the officer. He violently resisted being handcuffed, police said. A second officer came to assist. One officer was injured, police officials said.

Peter Engel, 33, of Orangeburg, was charged with second degree assault, a felony; resisting arrest, a misdemeanor; and unlawful possession of marijuana, a violation.

Engel is due in Nyack village court Tuesday.
