As the 4th of July approaches, our minds turn to food, family, fun, and fireworks. While we may need to wear masks while visiting with others this weekend, we will still be able to celebrate our nation’s independence. Food, family, fun, and legal fireworks will make our weekend memorable. Illegal fireworks may, however, lead to injury, death, and property loss. It is vital that we all know the fireworks that we can safely, and legally, use on our properties.
In Rockland County, the fireworks that individuals may use are limited to “sparkling devices,” commonly known as sparklers, as well as party poppers, and snappers. The individuals using them must be age 18 or over. Only organizations with permits may use aerial fireworks, fire crackers, bottle rockets, roman candles, and spinners.

“Why such restrictions?” you may ask. It is because of the high risk of injury and property loss that is tied to the use of fireworks. Even sparklers can burn at 2,000 degrees F. and start fires. Forbes Magazine reported in June that there were 19,000 structural fires caused by fireworks, and 4,900 fireworks injuries in the nation during the first week of July of 2018.
The ramifications of using anything but legal fireworks can be devastating if something goes wrong. Fines; imprisonment; charges of arson, of child endangerment; denial of insurance claims; even revocation of policies, could result.

Let’s celebrate our independence this weekend the right way. Enjoy the beautiful fireworks displays provided by municipalities. Limit your use of fireworks to legal items and use them with care. Keep your family, friends, and neighbors safe.
