Raccoons, Fleas Prevent Elementary School Opening Next Week

An adult raccoon and two babies were found in Haverstraw Elementary School.

HAVERSTRAW, NY — Haverstraw Elementary School won't be opening with the other schools in the North Rockland district on Tuesday. That's because the building is infested with fleas, according to The Journal News.

The fleas apparently came from an adult raccoon and two babies that were found this week at HES. The building has been treated, and must be cleaned, officials told the paper.

The school houses fourth- through sixth-graders. They'll have opening day at North Rockland High School. Then fourth-graders will have classes at nearby St. Peter's School and the upper two grades will be bused to Farley Elementary.
