New York's Tuohy Named Top National Female High School Athlete

The NRHS 16-year-old is the first ever to be a finalist in two categories.

ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY — Katelyn Tuohy, about to enter her junior year at North Rockland High in Thiells, won the prestigious Gatorade Female High School Athlete of the Year award. Tuohy is the first to be a finalist in two different sports, dominating in track and field and cross-country.

Writing in Sports Illustrated July 17, Stephanie Apstein said, "The fastest girl in the country can’t sit still. ... Except for the few times she’s been sick, she doubts she’s gone 24 hours without exercise since she took her first steps.

"She is still new enough to the sport that she often doesn’t know about the records she is chasing until after she breaks them," Apstein reported. Tuohy, 16, broke three of them this year.

The guy who won Male High School Athlete of the Year is JT Daniels, a football quarterback and senior-to-be at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, California. He and Tuohy walked the red carpet at the ESPYs Wednesday night. They will both appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

The Gatorade Company surprised Tuohy earlier this year with the news that it had named her 2017-18 Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year by sending pro middle distance runner Mary Cain.

Gatorade's press release cited these stats:

  • The 5-foot-4 sophomore raced to the Nike Cross Nationals championship this past season, breaking the tape in a course-record time of 16:44.7. Tuohy also won the Class A individual state championship in a course-record 17:51.4, and finished first at the New York Federation Championships in 16:52.4. Undefeated on the season, she also beat a loaded field at the NXN New York Regional championships (17:01) in addition to winning the prestigious Manhattan Invitational.
  • Tuohy has volunteered locally on behalf of youth soccer and running programs, and the Rose Memorial Library.
  • She has maintained an A average in the classroom.

Gatorade Senior Vice President and General Manager Brett O’Brien called her "a fantastic example to peers and aspiring young athletes of what a leader and a student-athlete should be."
