The Hudson Valley will swelter Thursday, with heat index values in the mid to upper 90s for the second consecutive day, according to the National Weather Service.

There's a heat advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m. for Rockland and Westchester counties and a severe threat of thunderstorms from 3-9 p.m. across much of the Tri-State region.

There is uncertainty on the exact timing and coverage of thunderstorms. The severe threat diminishes after sunset, but scattered showers and embedded thunderstorms could continue overnight, the NWS said.

"The primary threats will be strong gusty winds, small hail, and locally heavy rainfall, which may lead to ponding of water in low lying areas," said the folks at Hudson Valley Weather.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles
under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.

The thunderstorms are ahead of a cold front coming in from the west, which means conditions will improve a little Friday, forecasters said.
