SOUTH NYACK, NY — Village consultants will present a draft plan Wednesday during the second South Nyack Dissolution Plan public information meeting.

South Nyack residents who wanted to end the village-level layer of local government, leaving just the town of Orangetown, filed a petition with enough signatures to force a referendum, and then voted in favor of dissolution. Therefore the 3,500 residents are shutting down their village government, including building and public works departments, local court and police force, using a state-mandated process.

There are three other incorporated villages in the town — Nyack, Grand View-on-Hudson and Piermont — and 10 unincorporated communities, including Blauvelt, Upper Grandview and Pearl River. Orangetown's total population of roughly 49,000 is served by a full range of departments including the Orangetown police, who already handle policing for the village of Nyack. Village residents have use of some town services, including parks and recreation.

A galvanizing issue was the sale of part of the Nyack College campus to a Ramapo-based yeshiva and developer in December. The village is already in court over the Hasidic congregation's refusal to follow through on promised oversight, and the yeshiva's lawyer has invoked freedom of religion laws.
