Tappan Zee's Gavigan Qualifies For Millrose Games

Tappan Zee's Luke Gavigan entered the mile run at the Millrose Games Wednesday at the Armory in New York City Wednesday just hoping for a good time.

He did that and more, winning the race in 4:15.68, a personal best and the top time nationally this year, becoming the first Tappan Zee athlete to qualify for the Millrose Games.

"I wasn't looking for 4:15 or event he win, so I'm just super happy," Gavigan told ny.milesplit.com. "I was saving it in the first half. I just took a shot. My coach always tells me to take a shot, so I went for it."

Video of Gavigan's interview after the race is available here in Kyle Brazeil's report on ny.milesplit.com. Gavigan had just run a strong time of 4:18.50 to win the League 4B championship at the Armory Satiurday, which he said helped him heading into the Millrose trials.

"It definitely gave me confidence to run today," Gavigan said. "I was going to try to run the same game plan. Go out and relax in the first 800, then try to move up. The last 100 meters, just see what I had."

The Millrose Games will be held at the Armory Feb. 15, 2014.
