Visitation, Service for David Jahnes

The Nyack volunteer firefighter died responding to a call on Dec. 18. He was 58.

Visitation and service information has been released for David Jahnes, the Nyack firefighter who died responding to a call in Nyack Dec. 18. He was 58.

At 8:37 a.m. the Nyack Fire Department was dispatched to 20 North Broadway in Nyack for an unknown chemical odor. Jahnes responded on Nyack Fire Patrol’s rescue truck. When he arrived and exited the truck he began complaining of shortness of breath and chest pains. The Nyack Community Ambulance Corps was called to the scene and transported him to Nyack Hospital. He was then transferred to Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern for further treatment. While being treated at Good Samaritan, he suffered cardiac failure and could not be revived.

David Jahnes was born May 26, 1959. He had been a member of Nyack Fire Patrol and the Nyack Fire Department since 2001. He served as Captain of Fire Patrol from 2008-2011. He was currently serving as the Engineer of the rescue truck and the marine unit.

Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. Dec. 28 at First Reformed Church of Nyack, 18 South Broadway. A Firematic Service will begin there at 6 p.m. Arrangements are being handled by Hannemann Funeral Home of Nyack.

"Rockland County's firefighter and first-responder community has suffered a terrible loss," said County Executive Ed Day. "Even a seemingly routine call like the one that the Nyack Fire Patrol responded to on Monday poses dangers. Firefighters like David Jahnes understand these dangers and volunteer their time out of a selfless desire to protect their neighbors and their communities. The people of Rockland County and beyond are forever indebted to Firefighter Jahnes. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time."
