Road Closure For Firefighter Hero's Funeral Procession
A Nyack volunteer firefighter and a retired FDNY lieutenant, Joseph Stach Jr. died of 9/11 related cancer.

SOUTH NYACK, NY — The procession for the funeral of FDNY Lieut. Joseph R. Stach Jr. (Ret) will close a section Cedar Hill Avenue Friday morning, South-Nyack Grand View police said. The road is expected to be closed between South Broadway and South Franklin Street between 8 a.m. and noon, and the nearest alternate bus stop will be at South Broadway and Clinton. "We ask that you all keep Fire Lt. Stach's family in your thoughts and prayers," police said.
Stach, of Valley Cottage, NY, passed away on Jan. 7, 2018 after a hard fought battle with 9/11 related pancreatic cancer. He was born in Nyack, NY to Joseph Sr. and Elizabeth (Lee) Stach.
He was appointed to the FDNY on October 21, 1990, retiring in 2010 as a Lieutenant with Ladder Company 6 after 20 years with the FDNY. He spent 72 hours at Ground Zero immediately following 9/11, and worked at the site for weeks.

Joe was also a Life Member of Empire Hook & Ladder Co. #1 in Upper Nyack.
In 2010, Lieutenant Stach was awarded the Albert S. Johnston Medal for bravery.

Joe is survived by his parents Joseph Sr. & Lee Stach, his loving wife JoAnn, their 5 amazing children: Darren, Corrin, Kayla, Ryan and Tyler. He is also survived by his sister Lisa & Matt Ryder, and their children Erin & Kyle. Joe was a friend and mentor to many and will be deeply missed.
Visiting will take place on Thursday, January 11 at St. Ann’s Church, 16 Jefferson Street, Nyack from 2 – 4pm and 7 – 9pm. The Nyack Fire Department will hold Firematic Services at 7:30pm at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 12 at 11:00am at St. Ann’s Church. Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery, Rockland Lake.
