Walking The Dog When The Temperature Is Over 90 Degrees

How you can keep your pet safe during outings in high heat

Sweltering temperatures mean that we must take extra care when walking our companion animals. Temperatures this past week rose to a high of 97 degrees on Wednesday. The preceding two days were not much cooler. Preventing heat stroke in your dog or scorched paw pads requires just a little planning and a bit of moisturizer.

First, simply time your walks so that they take place during the coolest parts of the day, early morning and evening.

Second, if you must walk your pet in the middle of a hot, sunny day, choose shady areas where there is grass rather than pavement or asphalt. Studies have shown that on a day when the air temperature is in the 90's, you can expect it to be a full five degrees cooler in the shade. While the temperature on the grass in the sun may reach 100 degrees, it will reach a 110 degrees on cement pavement, and an astounding 130 degrees on asphalt. Veterinarians and the American Kennel Club recommend that you conduct a simple test if you want to walk your dog on sunny paved roads. Place the back of your hand on the blacktop. If you cannot keep it there for 10 seconds, it's too hot for your dog.

Third, moisturize your canine's paw pads to prevent drying and cracking. Cracks in paws make them more susceptible to scorching on hot surfaces. A little Vaseline rubbed into your pet's paws on a regular basis will protect them. It will also be a treat for your cuddly friend as most dogs love having their paws massaged.

So with just a little planning and a bit of moisturizer, you and your best friend can get out for some fresh air and a nice walk, regardless of how high the temperature rises.
